Standing room only

Standing room only
When all seats for a performance were sold out, cheaper tickets might be sold to allow theatergoers to stand at the back of the house. Thus a notice of "S.R.O." outside a theatre meant that the show was doing excellent business. Performers boasting of success might say, according to Judge Horton, "we stood 'em up."
